Hypothetical - Take It or Leave It

First, my apology for missing last week’s hypothetical. I figured it was inevitable I would eventually miss one, but no excuses, just slipped by. Which leads me to the hypothetical I have for this week. It deals with the old saying, “If I only knew then, what I know now!”

If someone gave you the option of taking all of the knowledge you have right now and starting your life all over at the age of 18 would you take this chance, even though you have just as much of a possibility of failure as you do success?

or

Would you take what life has dealt you to date and continue on the current track, but you’re given the guarantee that you will live a happy and comfortable life?

Absolutely taking the option!

Are you kidding? I thought of the idea of Google and eBay before MSN came out!

But yeah, I would take the option.

Give me #2. (mark that) No way I’d trade my kids for anything..

Yeah, this is a tough call for me. I like the idea of thinking you could dominate the world in all aspects of life but I’m not one to take big risks like that. Plus Matt brings up a good sports point about kids.

Give me taking what I’ve been dealt. I’d say I’ve had a pretty great life up to now. Sure, things could be better in some ways, but nothing can ever be perfect, even if you go back to 18 smarter.

@Anthony, I think you and I spoke about this like the week before they came out. :-)

I take option #2. If you take me back to 18 again, i’m not sure what i would do differently.

Interestingly enough, 18 is the age i met Ron and Matt (yes, the same ron and matt who head Linkworth).

Would my life be different if i hadn’t had that first under-age shiner bock on dollar Tuesday’s at the Wild Turkey?

I’m not sure i care to know.

Thanks for the memories guys :)

Very interesting hypothetical. There are two ways that I interpret option #1 and that could influence the decision. Would it be like Back To The Future where I travel back to the actual year I was 18 and can essentially predict the future? Or would I morph into my 18 year old self now in the year 2008 but just have more knowledge?

If I would just be 18 now in 2008, I’d pass. If it involves a little time travel, that would be very tempting but I think I would still pass as I would not want to take the chance that I don’t meet my wife and have our kids.

Plus, with the guarantee of being happy and comfortable with option #2 I think that makes it an easy choice.

The possibilities are endless with option 1, but on reflection I`d probably go for option 2. Mistakes and the acquiring of knowledge are all a part of life, certainly growing up. The guarantee of a happy & comfortable life in the future sounds very good.

I’m with Matt: I wouldn’t trade my kids for anything. Besides, even if I were to go back in time knowing then what I know now, I would still have to deal with other 18-year-olds and most of them are self-involved, drama-loving, irresponsible, manipulative little turds.

Chances are that between the age of 18-30 some pretty stupid, and should of, and could of, been deadly things were done; that looking back you may wonder how one escaped that and made it to this point. Regardless of the failures or sucesses those times created invaluable experience that for 1 you would not want to forget and 2 that if tried again might not work out so well. I’ll side with you Ron…option 2 (WHERE IS LUCKY)

No way I would I would give up everyting thats happened in the past…sure there was alot of dumb and potenially life threatening times… but we got this far how much better could it get. OTB95 (WHERES LUCKY)

Number two simply because the journey through life is a learning experience in and of itself. The world today changes minute by minute and beccause of the rapid change things that you know today and deem important and useful can become stale or bad knowledge or information rapidly. The only thing that may and can increase with age ia judgement and that has a strong corralation with a persons character. This is the one thing that is difficult to change

MegaD, dollar Shiners at the Wild Turkey…wow. When was that.. ‘94??? Great times. I wouldn’t trade those days for anything, either…

Given all the stupid things I’ve done, I think I would want to have as much wisdom as I possibly could from the start!

No way I wanna get back to my teens and work my ass off again a second time… I’m happy were I am and was never more happy before, so I’ll take option#2 as well (while it looks like I don’t even need that guarantee :)
