How To Publish A Home Page Only Link In WordPress

Many WordPress users run into a weird situation where they aren’t sure how to only show a link on the home page of their blog/site. There are two simple ways to tackle this:

  • Use our plugin. If you do use our plugin, make sure it is up to latest version (v3.2.8). Our plugin will automatically do this for you.
  • If you choose to publish links manually, we suggest using a plugin to execute php like PHP Code Widget … this plugin will allow you to add a php widget where the link(s) should appear and an example code to put into the widget would be:

    < ?php if(is_home() && !is_paged()) { ?>
    < a href=”http://site.com”>Anchor Text< /a>
    < ?php } ?>

(be sure to remove the space between the < and ? in both places)

Quick Publish Partners Earn More

About a year ago we added a new feature (Quick Publish) that gives Partners the option of letting LinkWorth approve new requests. The feature is not only a favorite of those currently using it, but it’s proving to increase sales for those that are participating. Advertisers want their ads published ASAP, so their searching for ‘quick publish’ partners first. Why not turn this feature on for your sites?

This is nothing automated, so there are no worries about LinkAds being published on your site that you wouldn’t approve. You get to clarify what you do not want on your site and this is reviewed when you have a new request by one of our support staff. You can also tell us to remove anything that shows up you aren’t happy with, even though it doesn’t fall into your exclude list.

To illustrate how Advertisers find your site, there is an option to toggle when searching our inventory:

and when this is selected, the results will only show the Partner websites that have opted into the quick publish service. It’s a great (and free) way to get your site(s) more exposure. If you need any help, contact our support department.

September Payouts Notice

Due to the short week, bank holiday and 10th falling on the weekend, payouts will be issued on Monday 9.12.11.

Would also like to alert partners of a new section we have added where we will communicate websites we are looking for to be listed. If you have additional websites in these categories and meet the requirements, add them to your account and we’ll be able to purchase ads on your site. We’re going to begin showing the feed of LinkWorth Requests inside the Control Center, so when you login you’ll be able to see new requests.

We Are Changing, So Change With Us

Our industry is awash in juicy news lately; most of which can be attributed to Google. They’ve implemented algorithmic updates targeting certain sites that will be of even less value now. As they change, we need to ensure we’re updating our inventory offering too. I think it’s time to alter an old saying to reflect, “Content Can Kill A King”.

All kidding aside, significant changes have been made intended to police the ever-growing levels of spammy content in the SERPs and really, it’s about time they did. When Google launched AdSense years ago, it spawned an entirely new microcosm on the web. We called them MFAs or “made for AdSense” sites. Basically, these are websites that are usually published via some automated mechanism and their sole purpose is to aggregate syndicated content through RSS feeds or bot scrapers and then monetize them through AdSense or any number of ad networks…LinkWorth not excluded. When you boil it all down, these kinds of sites offer nothing of value to users (or Advertisers) and it looks like their day in the sun has finally come to an end. And with that end comes a need for change.

Moving forward, we are going to do our best to clean up our Partner inventory by not only declining these MFA & scraper sites upon their submission to LinkWorth, but also by removing the existing ones from our community. It won’t happen overnight, but we have begun taking steps to address it and ultimately we’ll be providing a very valuable service to all of our advertisers. This change is not intended to alienate any of our loyal Partners. On the contrary, it’s our hope that our Partners will understand the situation and embrace the “new” industry standards of creating completely unique and useful content. The bottom line is, there is no longer a market for MFA/scraper/RSS sites so it doesn’t make sense for us as an organization to offer access to them. We are currently reviewing accounts with websites that would not be approved today and making decisions on a case by case basis. This added reviewing will be causing delays in some payouts. But this does not mean you will not be paid, just that we are reviewing your account.

Our Account Managers are working to ensure their campaigns are not including these type of websites so please take the necessary steps to address the new standards. We’re changing, so change with us!

SES London

Goodbye Dallas…hello London!

We will be making our European trade show debut at SES London next week and we invite all of our Partners and Advertisers who will be in attendance to come by and say hello. It’s a great opportunity for us to meet some of the important members of our community that we don’t get to see on the trade show circuit here in the states…so come on by if you can!

Updated LinkWorth Control Center

This update was planned to go live in November of 2010, however, we continued to get new suggestions and found additional areas to upgrade, which pushed things back until now. And while it is mostly on the Advertiser side of things, it was done to help increase sales for our partners.

The biggest changes you’ll notice will be on the “My Products” and “Shop” pages. We’ve upgraded technology, improved processes and made it much easier to build, launch and maintain your campaigns.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • New Shop page where you can search for all products on one page
  • More filters added for searching
  • Instant purchase or add to cart/wish list
  • Listings can be clicked to expand for additional information
  • New Cart page that allows you to easily change items
  • Long-term discounts now offered on recurring products
  • All changes on cart updates instantly
  • Buy multiple LinkPosts and space them out with one Partner
  • Update to My Products pages to decrease number of clicks to navigate
  • We have updated Sponsored Listings for partners to make it very simple

This is the upgrade in a nutshell. To really experience it, you just have to login and give it a run. We would love feedback, so if you run into any issues or have questions or suggestions, please click the feedback button in the bottom right and let us know.

Yesterday we also experienced a server failure that hosted our blog and support software. We’re happy to have everything restored on a much nicer server. Sorry for any inconveniences.

The Importance of Unique Content

Hey there to everyone in the LinkWorth family.  I just wanted to take a moment to discuss the latest Google Algorithm update and how we can all make sure to stay on the light side of the force with this change; that way we can all keep our rankings high and the traffic flowing in.  To summarize what is widely understood as the main concern of this new update, Google is putting forth more effort than ever before to fight content farming; essentially duplicate and/or stolen content.

What does this mean for you? Well, it means that if your site has duplicate content on it then there is a chance it could be devalued and drop in the rankings.  Fortunately the solution is simple, just make sure your site is composed of unique and compelling content.  Granted, this is “the Internet” and content is regularly swapped and shared (that’s the very definition of something going viral) however I would urge Webmasters out there to consider the many benefits of original content beyond simply staying on the good side of Google.  For E-Commerce sites, original content and copy help to differentiate your store from that of your competitors, and for blogs and most other types of websites unique and original content is what will keep your visitors coming back again and again, as well as attracting new visitors. The ultimate aim here is to provide the best value and experience for the end users of our websites.  For those that may need a little help, might I remind everyone that LinkWorth has a team of writers standing by to create original content for whatever your need may be.  If we keep these things in mind and create great content, being found online is a piece of cake.

Happy Holidays!!

I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful holiday season so far. Just a reminder, our offices will be closed tomorrow, December 23, and will reopen on Tuesday, December 28.

Thanks to everyone who helped us make 2010 another great year in LinkWorth history. We laughed. We cried. We linked…

We have some exciting plans for 2011 and can’t wait to hear what you think. Along with some fairly major upgrades to both the front and back ends of LinkWorth.com, we hope to innovate some new ways to make our Partners some money and help our Advertisers increase their traffic. Stay tuned!

Have a happy and safe New Year!

Alternative Publishing Option for WordPress

Recently had a customer wishing to publish ads on his WordPress blog, however, he did not want to use the plugin. In addition, he wanted to combine LinkWorth ads with other ad networks inside one widget. The reasoning was to limit the number of widgets displaying on the sidebar. Today there is a new customer requesting the exact same thing, so I felt it might be useful to post an alternative option for anyone else looking for the same thing.

The problem with using our PHP File Inclusion inside a text widget is, the text widget does not parse PHP code. You can only put HTML or JavaScript inside these widgets.

If you do not want to use our plugin (which is the easier option since it incorporates almost all of our products), you are able to use our PHP File Inclusion publish option inside a widget, along with other ad network publish codes by following these steps.

  1. Install this PHP Code Widget plugin and activate it.
  2. Go to the widgets section and place the “PHP Code” widget where you want it to appear.
  3. Grab your File Inclusion PHP code from your LinkWorth account and insert it into the widget.
  4. Save the widget information and you’re done!

Here is a screenshot of how the widget will look with the LinkWorth code in, along with how you can publish other ad network code and html:

PHP Code Widget Example

Now if you are going to do this and are publishing a ‘home page only’ ad, you need to tell WordPress it should only be on the home page. You do so by adding this code before the LinkWorth code:

< ?php if(is_front_page()){ ?>

and then you add this code after the LinkWorth code:

< ?php } ?>

Here is a screenshot of how it will appear in the widget:

Home Page Only Example

The last scenario is if you offer both home page ads and all page ads. In this case you’ll need to include both PHP File Inclusion code snippets in the widget. Both can be found in the publish section of your LinkWorth account. Here is a screenshot of both codes working together in the same widget:

Home & All Page Example

Of course, there are also sub page links, but this gets a bit messy. You’ll definitely need to understand the WordPress conditional tags and make sure what you enter on your blog matches what you have setup with LinkWorth. For more info on this, you can read about it over at WordPress.

**Side Note**
The LinkWorth File Inclusion code examples used above should be replaced with the code found in your account. We used example code that does not work.

Beware of Fake LinkWorth Emails

Today we sent a system wide email to warn everyone of fake emails that are being sent. There seems to be confusion on the email we sent, so I wanted to also post it here on the blog to ensure everyone understands.

We were notified of phishing emails being sent to people that make it appear as if LinkWorth had sent it from support {at} linkworth, however, this was not us. If you get any sort of email saying your account with LinkWorth has been temporarily disabled and it asks you to download a file, DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE FILE.

Here is one email that has been reported:

Dear Customer,

This e-mail was send by linkworth.com to notify you that we have temporanly prevented access to your account.

We have reasons to beleive that your account may have been accessed by someone else. Please run this file and Follow instructions:

LinkWorth will never ask you to update personal and login information via email, nor download any sort of file. If you receive an email similar to this, please forward it to admin {at} linkworth {dot} com. This appears to be an isolated incident, but something we couldn’t just ignore.
