MyYahoo Jumps On The NoFollow Bandwagon

I use my.yahoo as my homepage and I noticed over the weekend that they had implemented the nofollow attribute to all of the links. I use Firefox with the Search Status extension that will automatically highlight all nofollowed links on a page in pink; so when I logged in on Saturday my yahoo homepage looked like a big bucket of strawberry ice cream.

It was said early on when nofollow came out that although Yahoo supposedly wouldn’t pass any link popularity through nofollow’d links; they would still follow the links. Has this changed? As far as I could tell (although I never tested it), MyYahoo wasn’t passing any juice so I don’t really get why they’d do this. Maybe they were. (Damn! I should’ve taken better advantage of it if that’s the case.)

I guess I really don’t care about this one way or the other, but unless I want to turn off my SEO add-on, I now hate my homepage. Maybe it’s time for a new one…

Yahoo must’ve heard about my threats because they have removed the nofollow attribute from MyYahoo. I feel so loved.

Et tu, AdSense?

We’re all aware that Google AdSense “matches ads to your site’s content” right? (At least in theory.)

And I think it’s safe to assume that we know how Google feels about paid links, right? Ahem…

Well, that’s precisely why I think the subject of this post is so ironic.

Early on there were countless instances where Google would display AdSense ads that were completely off-topic to the publisher’s site. I remember reading all of the grumbles and growls about it…especially a couple years back. Now, though, I think they do a pretty good job of sending targeted ads to the right places, wouldn’t you agree?

Keeping this in mind, I was doing some research for a client today and I came across a post on Search Engine Land that caught my eye. It wasn’t the title of the post that caught my eye nor was it the author. (Although I have MASSIVE amounts of respect for Barry…just stay with me.) No, what caught my eye were the AdSense ads being displayed a couple paragraphs under the title.

It wasn’t until after I had wiped the tears of laughter from my eyes that I was able to take that screenshot.

What’s so funny about it, you ask? If you’re aware of the whole Google Mini link debate you’ll know what I mean.

Basically, in return for purchasing the Google Mini search appliance you are rewarded with a link to your site. Now, let’s piece that together real quick: you buy something from Google and they link to your site. Sounds like a paid link, right?

Of course it does. It is.

But that’s old news and I’ve already heard Google’s defense that these links don’t pass juice blah, blah, blah.

The true irony to me is that Google’s own product seems to be “turning the knife” on Google itself here. I mean, right smack-dab in the middle of a blog post about paid links is an AdSense ad for the Google Mini…which doubles as Google’s own paid link product! Giggle.

I guess maybe Google is doing too good of a job at matching AdSense with relevant content, huh?!

More Hypocrisy By Google – Nofollow?

A couple of weeks ago, I blogged about Google selling links for a cheap annual price of $1,995. It was a story that I read some time ago but could not find the real owner, until today when Rustybrick sphunn what I had just sphunn and provided a link to the original story. I appreciate someone finally telling me who I could credit because I don’t like duplicating stories without giving kudos.

As I’m reading the comments on sphinn today, I see where people are saying the backlinks are not showing up. I would suggest they are not looking very hard. I researched several when I was blogging a couple of weeks ago and found the google backlinks on several of the domains. This made me want to do even more research today and I happened across even more google links that are essentially links that were bought. Oddly enough, the nofollow tag is absent on all of these. Something Google is forcing everyone to do if it is paid for in some fashion.

Now the original link farm style page was a hit and miss for finding google on their backlinks. Lucky for me, I stumbled on a gold mine of hard evidence they are nothing but hypocrites over at Google. Let me introduce the enterprise superstars!

These people are Google customers who have paid for the Google Mini and because they paid, were recognized and highlighted. The first page is a list of the “Current Winners”. Each person from the respective company is highlighted and given a Pay for Post style write up on a Google blog. (example)

Now let us move on to the real gold, the success stories page. If there were doubts about passing juice before, this page should seal the deal with proof.

I did the daunting task of checking all 187 links on this page (umm..link farm?) and the results paint the picture:

  • 171 of the domains have google.com appearing in their google backlinks.
  • 10 of the domains do not have google.com in their google backlinks.
  • 5 of the domains have no cache and/or no website present.
  • 1 of the domains has a typo and the link does not work.

In summary, if you want a good solid backlink or even a backlink and a blog review on the google blog, then pay for the google mini and become one of their superstars.

What Link Buyers Want

I get asked questions like “How can I sell more ads on my site?” all the time so I thought I would share a few things that might shed some light on what Advertisers really look for when buying links.

You’d think it was really simple. Advertisers are just looking for basic relevance, high PR (barf), or lots of traffic, right? Well, yes and no.

While all of those are true, savvy advertisers are scrutinizing the links they buy more today than ever before. And, especially given the nature of what we do here at LinkWorth, we’ve become very familiar with link buyer motivations.

99% of people who buy links expect one of these three things:

1. Improved rankings or PageRank
2. Click-throughs (from high traffic domains)
3. Buzz (new company, reputation management, re-branding, or whatever)

Once you understand what the motivators are you can then consider how the link buyers go about selecting the websites they use when building a campaign. The smart ones do a lot of homework and base their decisions on a variety of factors. As a publisher, you should know what they’re looking for.

Since I have “list-o-phobia” I will refrain from putting these in any particular order, but here are some recurring themes I hear when it comes to paid link selection.

Strength of site
Thankfully, this does not refer to toolbar PR exclusively. (That is so 2005!) Strength can be measured in other ways like age of domain, inbound link profile, Alexa/Compete ratings, pages indexed, clean code, etc. I’ve even heard of really hardcore buyers that check out the WayBackMachine and see what they’ve got on tap. (You can tell if a site was keyword stuffing back in 2002!) We don’t get to see the TrustRank of a site but it’s something that is critically important for ranking on Google.

Even further, nothing says “buy a link from me” quite like great rankings for your own title phrasing or keywords. Just the fact that you rank well is a key-indicator that your site is trusted and will probably pass juice. (And don’t think for one second that your prospective customers aren’t looking at this, because they are!) If you’re ranking for popular keywords you’re probably getting a good bit of traffic which can be a tantalizing added bonus for Advertisers.

Related content
This is beyond your control as a publisher, but what you can do is have well-written, unique content about whatever the theme of your site actually is. If someone from your niche comes along, be the obvious choice because your content is the best out there. I realize this is much easier said than done, but if you are serious about monetizing your website FOR A LIVING in the midst of the millions of websites being added to the internet, it is probably a good idea to be thinking this way.

Value
This just in: advertising online is expensive! Provide value and you’ll attract more advertisers. Be reasonable in your asking price and people will come. Always keep in mind that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, too, because marketers come in all shapes and sizes with different philosophies and levels of knowledge. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure! Just don’t price yourself out of the game.

Perceived value can extend beyond the realm of cost, too. If go above and beyond for an advertiser they’re likely to stay with you month after month after month. For example, you might get a special request in regards to a link placement or something. My advice? Do it if you can! Or at least consider it because educated link buyers know going in that they want to have the same inbound links indexed for an extended period of time. Sure, that might make them a bit picky, but when you consider that they’re prepared to commit to you for YEARS in some cases that it’s probably not an excessive request. The way I see it is, you’re in this together. Work with your partners!

Options
Especially within this community, the more options you have available the better. Offer multiple ad types, page locations, packages, etc. Buyers are getting smarter and don’t want just the typical sidebar or footer link on the index page anymore. Be open to this! Take the time to list your sub-pages that address specific topics, for example. Fish with a big net! Offer rotating ads or paid blog posts, too, because you never know how you might fit in to someone else’s campaign. Why exclude yourself?

Websites that aren’t “obviously” selling links for rankings or PR

Over-the-top disclosure, especially with all the recent dialogue about paid links, can be a deal-killer. Is it right? That’s not for me to decide, but if I’m a publisher I’m following the money. Most advertisers I speak with request that we find them sites that make it difficult to determine if their outbounds are sponsored or not.

Hint: use your blogrolls! 😉

Websites that aren’t completely littered with ads & outbounds
You’ve seen the sites that have very little content but an enormous amount of ads, right?. MFAs, banner buffets, link farms, and every other junk site you can think of are losing business in a hurry these days because it’s difficult for these types of sites to have a positive impact on a linking campaign. I, along with everyone else who knows anything about it, always advise clients against using “hollow” sites because they just don’t produce.

There is a fine line between monetizing your site and whoring it out. Sites that are written out of passion tend to do the best. Even if your sole intention is to monetize your site (which is most often the case, right?), there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. Just be aware that if your site looks like the Las Vegas strip you probably won’t attract tons of link buyers!

The fact we just bought a couple new laptops from Dell makes me feel like an idiot. Who knew I could have hooked up an old PC and made it mobile. Can Press Releases Help Me Market My Site?

Lee Odden of Top Rank Online Marketing wrote a good blog today about using Press Releases as Online Marketing Tools. It talks about how you can utilize Press Releases to not only get more exposure and traffic, but how you can use them as a tool to build your Link Popularity as well. If you’re thinking that Press Releases are only for large corporations, or that they won’t do anything to help you, we think you might want to reconsider. Distribute the release via a wire service like Business Wire and PRWeb or PRNewswire. If you distribute the same release through more than one wire service on the same day, it is very likely that the news search engines will filter out the duplicates. If your story has more than one angle, take advantage of that and mix it up.

SES San Jose

This was my first trip to SES San Jose and I must say that overall I was impressed with the show out there last week. I felt more involved as an attendee than I have at previous shows and I thought the turnout was great. San Jose is, after all, located in the heart of Silicon Valley so there should not have been a shortage of technology companies displaying their search engine-related wares and services. The Google party wasn’t bad, either. 😉

My schedule allowed for two full days at the conference so I had to use the time wisely. My plan was to peruse the exhibit hall on Tuesday and attend sessions the entire day on Wednesday with several client meetings sprinkled throughout. It worked out well although there never seems to be enough time to accomplish everything. I noticed her custom stand from the exhibition was an amazing way to create a unique space for her brand. Here’s a quick rundown of my time in San Jose.

Tuesday

Because I couldn’t book a room anywhere near the McEnery Convention Center I had to take a cab downtown. (A word to the wise: book these trips early….it’ll save you some grief if you plan ahead and get convenient accommodations.) I was able to obtain my registration badge quickly and then it was off to peruse the exhibition hall. GYM (Google/Yahoo/MSN) occupied much of the prime real estate as would be expected. They all had great booths set-up where they were touting the greatness of their respective PPC programs and handing out their shwag. MSN, being the newest kid on the block in this arena, seemed the most enthused about discussing their product. I hope they do well…I’d love to see Bill give Larry and Sergey a run for their money in search advertising!

Several companies represented themselves very well with fresh booths, cool give-a-ways, and had educated staff on hand to field even the most uncommon questions. Others did not, but I won’t mention any names. It was nice seeing what everyone had to offer and I made a special point to stop be each booth on display. Whether it was for twenty seconds or twenty minutes, I wanted to see it all. I was very impressed with a company I knew nothing about: www.weRlive.com. They boast live video chats with experts on a variety of topics. I thought that was a very unique concept and they seem to have it put together nicely. They could still use some “depth” in regards to the subjects their experts cover, but I was still impressed with their concept. (I would have been more impressed had I won the Pontiac Solstice they were giving away, but no…I didn’t walk away a winner on that one.)

SES has what they call a “networking lunch” each day in the exhibit hall. They had, I don’t know, a hundred tables or more set up that seat 8 people each. Half of those tables had signs on them that would detail a specific topic of interest and folks could just have a seat and chat with like-minded individuals while eating their complimentary box lunch. I got there late and the two “Linking” tables I saw were completely full. I wasn’t really in the mood to learn more about “In-house SEM” or “CPA” so I decided to take my grub out to the WiFi area and return some emails. I like the concept, though, and for anyone who is considering attending an SES show in the future by themselves….this would be a great way to meet people.

Tuesday’s events led right into the Google Dance; the big bash that Google hosts each year at their corporate headquarters. All SES attendees, Google employees, and whoever else was invited and it was definitely an experience that I’m glad I didn’t miss. There were literally thousands of people crawling the Google campus and I, for one, was blown away by the magnitude of this event. First of all, they sent chartered buses to ferry everyone to and from the Google headquarters. Once we arrived, I was promptly greeted by cheerful Google employees who enthusiastically issued me a Google t-shirt and coralled me in the direction of the closest bar…of which there were several. There was a lot of great food, interactive exhibits, cool gadgets, fun activities, and good music. (Yes, I even did the “Dancing Heads” deal that superimposes your face on a dancing, cartoon body. Funny stuff.) Everyone had a great time from what I could tell so I’d like to personally say, “thanks, Google.” One of their employees even offered to drive me back to my hotel so I wouldn’t have to wait in the long line to be bussed back to the convention center. Wednesday

After a client meeting for breakfast, my first session of the day was an interview between Danny Sullivan and Eric Schmidt, the current CEO of Google. Mr. Schmidt offered a fairly guarded-yet-polite perspective on Google’s current state-of-affairs and product offerings. Mr Sullivan even asked him at one point why they had so many products? There has been some banter that people are beginning to fear Google because of their size. Mr. Schmidt calmly stated that their overall mission is clear and simple: to solve people’s problems online. I think “to make more money” would have been far more honest yet less-popular answer, but whatever. It is business after all, right? At any rate, it was an interesting conversation.

My next session was called “Linking Strategies” and the speakers were Debra Mastaler from Alliance-Link.com, Greg Boser from WebGuerilla, & Eric Ward from ericward.com. Although there was nothing ground-breaking about any of the information discussed, I must say that I was impressed with Eric during his presentation. He appears to be very professional with a deep understanding of the SEO industry.

The next session was called “Buying Links” and the speakers were the same but also included Patrick Gavin & Thomas Bindle. Again, nothing new here but the consensus is there is a HUGE demand for links…which we’re in touch with here at LinkWorth. Relevancy is rule #1. Attention LinkWorth Partners & Advertisers: Buy/Sell links from relevant sites only! This is common knowledge in the industry but a friendly reminder never hurt anyone. From a Partner’s perspective, if you only accept relevant text ads to publish on your site you’ll benefit yourself in two ways: 1) you’ll attract more Advertisers because you won’t have unrelated links next to each other which could dilute the strength of that inbound link. 2) you will have more credibility in the eyes of the search engines because you won’t have irrelevant outbound links. The stronger your site is, the more ad requests you will receive. From an Advertiser’s perspective, inbound links from relevant sites have more “juice” and your chances for click-throughs are higher because you’re addressing your target demographic.

I attended most of the “Link Baiting” session, as well. This session was focused on methods & techniques to attract links naturally. All due respect, I lost interest in this session and left early so I don’t want to mention the names of the speakers. Sorry guys! It was at the end of a long day and I had a plane to catch, anyway.

So that was my experience in condensed form. We’ll be attending SES shows across the country at least semi-regularly but I’d certainly recommend San Jose to those who have never been before. Have a great day….
